-d6nhv63cv
Si no estáis suscritos, no os va a dejar leer mucho. Así que os lo copio.
Gigi Hadid interview: ‘I have always had the guilt of privilege’
One of the world’s highest paid models and star of the new Pirelli calendar explains why she never relied on her parents’ money

Gigi Hadid is padding barefoot through the suite of a luxury Manhattan hotel wearing a cashmere dressing gown and not a lot else, insisting that she still has a lot to learn about the fashion business. “At first, I wanted to prove myself so badly. I wanted people to like me,” she says. “Then you start to build up a wall out of fear of messing up. Now I’m learning to be assertive. I want to grow and get better with every shoot.”

Some might say she shouldn't worry too much -at 23, Hadid is already one of the world's highest-paid models, with a net worth estimated to be $13 million. "I've been photographed my whole life," says the model whose first professional job, at age two, was for the fashion brand Guess. "My mother was always on set with me and taught me so much. She understood what it was like and she never surgarcoated anything for my sister (fellow model Bella Hadid) and me, so I think we were as prepared as we could be when we went into it full-time. Success to me now is doing something every day that I'm inspired by. I work my ass off. I'm exhausted, but I'm there in every picture."

Like any good modern-day celebritye, Hadid isn't just a model. She's also a reality-TV star, brand ambassador and super-influencer. With 42 millions followers on Instagram and more than 9 million on Twitter, Hadid had a powerful social media cachet that makes her as marketable as she is beautiful - she was reportedly paid $1.3 million to perform the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the opening of a luxury shopping centre on the Greek island of Mykonos. She makes a fortune co-designing clothing, eyewear, shoes, make-up and jewellery with various companies. Her mere involvement guarantees publicity and sales. Recently, Beyoncé wore custom pieces from Hadid's jewellery collaboration with a Parisian designer, and after the model gushed about how thrilled she was on Instagram, sales rocketed.

Not everyone is a fan, though. When Hadid first hit the catwalk, some said the 5ft 10in tall model was not thin enough for high fashion and did not have the elegant walk required for runway work. She has previously said that she had "let the negativity get to me a little bit".

There were also sniggers about her flashy, wealthy background. She was born in California as Jelene Noura Hadid. Her father, Mohamed Hadid, is a Jordanian-American property developer said to be worth $400 million. Her Dutch-born mother, Yolanda Foster, is a former model and star of the reality-TV show "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills". Hadid and her younger sister, Bella, also featured in the show with their younger brother, Anwar. The family lived on a sprawling estate in Maliby, in an opulent mansion with a pool, gym, home cinema and panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.

Her parents, who divorced in 2000, are still in the news almost as much as their daughters. Hadid's father was recently fined and sentenced to community service after one of the giga-mansions he built in Bel-Air, a colossal 30,000 sq ft property nicknamed "The Starship Enterprise" by fuming neighbours was deemed to have violated Los Angeles' building and height restrictions.
Last year he had a walk-on part in a John Travolta film. He and his girlfriend live in LA in a Versailles-style house he designed and built, said to be worth $85 million.

Gigi's mother, who was recently divorced from the Grammy award-winning music producer David Foster, lives on a farm in upstate New York and has been guest judge on the fashion show "Project Runway". Yolanda is also writing a book about her long-running health problems caused by the bacterial infection Lyme disease - Bella was also diagnosed with it in 2012 and had to give up her dream of becoming an Olympic equestrian. "My teenage years were taken from me," Bella has said of the illness.

"I've always had the guilt of privilege, " Gigi says of her gilded childhood. "It started in high school, and I was determined to not be defined by it, or by being pretty. I was a great volleyball player and I had great grades. That's how I valued myself.
"It was always my parents' money, and I was always going to get a job and live independently. I've paid my own bills since I was 18. My first Louboutings came from my first pay cheque.
"I think I can come from a priviliged background and still be a hard worker and a nice person. I don't think I'm better than anyone else, and I hold myself to that. I try to work with integrity."

On Instagram, Hadid's fans follow her on-off romance with the singer Zayn Malik (he has a tattoo of Hadid's eyes on his chest) and get a window on to her friendship with her fellow model Kendall Jenner, the tennis star Serena Williams and the singer Taylor Swift and their fabolous lives.

When Hadid when to the Coachella music festival with Bella this year, they didn't slum it in the tents, but rented a villa in the desert of Palm Springs, with a man-made beach and faux ocean, that was said to have cost $350,000 for the weekend.

Today Hadid is in her adoptive home city to talk about her latest modelling gig: the 2019 Pirelli calendar. She is one of four women chosen by the Scottish photographer Albert Watson to play a movie character, each of whom is supposed to be on the road to achieving her goals. Hadid poses as a rich young woman who rents a penthouse for several months to get away from the world and work through a personal crisis. Her confidant in this imaginary escape is the fashion designer Alexander Wang, a friend in real life.
"She's an aristocratic type who's going through something and having a hard time," Hadid says. "She's lonely and sad, and I think there's a beauty about that in terms of learning about yourself and finding our what you need to feel fulfilled."
Hadid says she can identify with her character's loneliness. "Sometimes I'm around hundreds of people all day long. Then you go back to a hotel room and you're alone in a country you don't know well and in a time zone where you can't call the people closest to you.
"It's these times when I feel alone, that I learn a lot about myself. It's an amazing way to reflect...you can grow a lot," she says.

The other stars of the calendar include the American ballet dancer Misty Copeland, who plays a stripper in a nightclub and is paired with her fellow ballet star Calvin Royal III. The French actress and model Laetitia Casta plays an artist and is paired with the Ukranian actor and ballet dancer Sergei Polunin. The actress Julia Garner, the star of the Netflix series "Ozark", poses as a botanical photographer. The Danish model Astrid Eika makes a guest appearance in the calendart oo.
Watson, who has shot portraits of Alfred Hitchcock, Steve Jobs and Kate Moss, says the theme is about the female characters' "hopes, aspirations and dreams". He says: "The idea was not to make it look like fashion shoots, but like iconic film stills - not easy, but I think we've pulled it off."

Only a small number of Pirelli calendars are printed each year and sent to VIPs - they do not go on sale. Hadid says she's "honoured" to have been chosen. It will be her second apprearance. She first posed for it in 2015, when she was photographed in a black latex bodysuit.

Hadid says that she would like to try acting. "I get sent roles all the time - the model, the girlfriend. When I get something that's the opposite of that, I'll do it," she says. "I want to be smart and play characters that I'm really interested in. I'd rather do nothing than a random bunch of cameos."

When she's not working, Hadid has a close group of friends whom she relies on. "I have three or four really close friends, including one I've had since high school, who are there in the dark times and I'm so blessed to have them. They reming me who I am and that I'm good enough," she says.

She also spends times on her mother's farm, as an escape from the paparazzi who follow her everywhere. She rides horses (like her sister, she's an accomplished equestrian). She feeds the cows and chickens and doesn't bother about what she wears or how she looks. "I always go back to work feeling better. It's about shutting off and not putting on hair and make-up, even if it's just for one day."
