Offred Offred is the narrator of the story. She is a thirty-three-year-old woman who is assigned to the Commander as his Handmaid
We never learn her real name (Offred means “Of Fred,” her Commander), and we know little about her physical appearance. She has brown hair, stands about five foot seven, and is 33 years old.

The Commander has gray hair, wears a black suit, and looks “like a Midwestern bank president.”

Rita is a "Martha." She is a woman of about sixty and is the cook in the Commander's household. She is rather bad-tempered and Offred does not get along with her.
