The novel charts the illicit romance in a tightly-knit community between a fragile woman named Georgie and a mysterious young poacher. When Georgie’s partner gets wind of the tryst a chase ensues between the two men across Australia’s remote and unforgiving terrain.
Filming begins on Bardi Jawi country in the Kimberley, Western Australia and will continue on Noongar country in Perth and Esperance, Western Australia. Heads of department include production designer Michael Carlin (Colette), cinematographer Sam Chiplin (The Cry), costume designer Anna Borghesi (Hotel Mumbai), editor Pia Di Ciaula (A Very British Scandal), and casting directors Lucy Bevan (An Education) and Kirsty McGregor (Animal Kingdom).

Quiero empezar a rodarla en primavera. Es de lo que más ganas tengo. Es una adaptación de la novela The ploughmen. Saldrán Robert Duvall, Garrett Hedlund, mi esposa Amy [Madigan]. He escrito el guion. Tengo ganas de ponerla en marcha.

El argumento de la
novela:
Steeped in the lonesome Montana country, unyielding as it is beautiful, The Ploughmen is the story of two men-an aging killer awaiting trial, and a troubled young deputy-who sit across from each other in the dark, talking through the bars of a county jail cell. El argumento (sacado de la ficha de IMBD):
Georgie (Macdonald), sometime sailor, diver and nurse used to have guts. But somehow she has lost her way. Stranded in a remote fishing town on the West Australian coast she's living with a man she doesn't love, Jim (Wenham) and his young sons whose dead mother she can never replace. But a reckless moment leads to a life-changing encounter with Lu (Hedlund), an enigmatic loner, one time musician and sometimes poacher, outcast from the community. The two are powerfully drawn to each other and embark on an inescapable, intense and sexually charged affair. Georgie will risk everything for this chance of love, but Lu is haunted by a tragic accident from his past. For him the prospect is too painful and he retreats into the wilderness to the remotest islands leaving little clue as to his whereabouts. With the unlikely help of Jim who is determined to right the wrongs of his own past, Georgie embarks on a journey to bring Lu back from his past and his grief, ultimately finding herself.

Filming the adaptation of Tim Winton’s epic novel Dirt Music has been a unique experience for its stars.
American Garrett Hedlund plays loner and musician Lu Fox and Scottish-born Kelly Macdonald is his lover, Georgie.
Production began in the Kimberley, with filming on the Bardi Jawi Islands off the coast of the Dampier Peninsula, and continued in the south where the white sands and turquoise waters of Esperance became the movie’s backdrop.
Hedlund had seen a little of Australia while filming Angelina Jolie’s war-drama Unbroken on the east coast but had never been west.
“What we’ve been able to see on this film has been absolutely incredible,” he said.
“Some of the sunsets and tide changes were unlike anything I’ve seen before and there’s something quite surreal and spiritual about it.”
Macdonald had never been Down Under before she was cast in director Gregor Jordan’s film.
“I’ve been all over WA and it has been just life-changing visiting all these remote places,” she said.
