Ídem, pero bueno estamos tan acostumbradas a famosos llamando la atención a toda costa que igual es todo un poco subjetivo.

Elsa Pataky: ‘My whole life became about exercise, I just fell in love with being healthy and fit’

She literally wrote the book on strength, so it’s no wonder Elsa Pataky has had a lifelong love affair with keeping her body in the best shape she can. Yet, she tells Body+Soul, it’s less about looking good than it is having the physical and mental capacity to make the most of each and every day.

No bathrobes or cover-ups are needed on the set of Body+Soul’s photo shoot with Elsa Pataky. As she poses amid lush greenery at a palatial home just outside Byron Bay, the 44-year-old is comfortable and self-assured enough to be walking around the set in little more than a swimsuit.

And why wouldn’t you when you look like you’ve been sculpted from marble? Sure, Pataky – a model, actor and wellness advocate so focused on being physically and mentally tough that she actually released a book called Strong – may draw attention and make a solid living thanks to her enviable looks and figure. But appearance has always played second fiddle to ensuring her body functions powerfully.

“If I’m not exercising, I don’t feel strong. I feel soft and I don’t like it,” she tells Body+Soul in a Spanish accent that is laced with an Australian inflection.

“I am a very active person. I want my body to stay young – in strength and energy. I want to still go horseriding with my daughter when I’m 80!”

Pataky explains that her obsession with vitality was piqued when she watched the Olympics as a teenager in Spain. “I was in awe of the fit, athletic body and my whole life became about exercise. I’ve never stopped since I was 14. I just fell in love with being healthy and fit,” she says. The love affair intensified when, after forging a successful acting career in Europe, she moved to Hollywood. “I learnt so much about health and fitness in Los Angeles,” says Pataky, who had a recurring role in the Fast & Furious franchise. “They were much more advanced in LA than in Spain.”

Of course, while she was there, she fell in love again – this time with fellow expat Chris Hemsworth. Not surprisingly, the two bonded over their shared passion for staying active (Pataky, who is a Swisse ambassador, also features on Hemsworth’s online fitness program Centr). “[Chris and I] love to do sports, eat healthy and move our bodies,” says Pataky.

The couple’s children – daughter India, 8, and six-year-old twin sons Sasha and Tristan – are following their parents’ lead. “We’ve got the kids into surfing,” Pataky says. “Any hobbies to get them outside, and not on social media and computers. My daughter has been horseriding with me since she was two-and-a-half.”

It was her pregnancies, Pataky tells Body+Soul, that marked the only times when she did not feel strong in her body. “I had to slow down during my pregnancies and I couldn’t exercise as hard as I wanted,” she says. But the physical changes that came with carrying a child paled in comparison to the mental impact of motherhood. “I remember feeling a bit lost when I had India,” she says. “I thought my life was going to be the same [when I had kids] and I would keep working. But I couldn’t. Chris would come home and say, ‘How was your day?’ And I didn’t feel proud to say: I’m just a mum. But you should. Because it’s the hardest but greatest job in the world.”

Once Pataky adjusted to her new responsibilities, she decided it was time to press pause on her career. “I really liked being with the kids,” she says. “I wanted to take them to school and pick them up every day. I just love that moment. I didn’t grow up with my parents [around] and I missed that so much, so I wanted to give that to my kids.”

Pataky still takes the occasional role – she was a key player in Netflix’s 2018 limited series "Tidelands". But she is not actively pursuing that next big project. “I love acting, but having balance is important to me. So, if something comes along that fits into my life and lets me work close to home, then I’m happy to do it,” she says with a knowing look that suggests there’s truth to the speculation she is working on a project that remains under wraps for now.

Home, of course, is not too far from where she is now posing up for her shoot. Since moving to Byron Bay in 2014, she and Hemsworth have been the NSW coastal resort town’s most famous residents. And while they moved there to escape the trappings of fame in America (and to be closer to Hemsworth’s own family), their seemingly idyllic lifestyle has drawn international curiosity, attracted other celebrities to town and brought out the paparazzi. But, says Pataky, “We still feel like we have a normal life here. For now.”

The couple will mark a decade of marriage at the end of the year, a milestone Pataky insists has not come without effort. “It’s funny that people think of us as a perfect couple,” she says. “No way. It’s been ups and downs, and we still keep working at the relationship. I think a relationship is constant work. It’s not easy.” But true to form, Pataky says any struggles they’ve encountered have only made their union stronger. “I always try to see the positives of things.”
